Chinese Vice President Han Zheng spoke at the 29th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) plenary session on Friday and put forward Global Governance Initiative by China. He called for putting it into practice and cooperating for a better future.

Addressing Global Governance gaps

Han stated in his speech that global issues and governance deficiencies are becoming more noticeable, and that significant changes not seen in a century are accelerating worldwide. Nearly 160 nations and international organisations have responded favourably to China’s proposed Global Governance Initiative, he continued.

According to Han, the Group of Friends of Global Governance was founded at the UN to deliver a cohesive message for defending the goals and tenets of the UN Charter, promoting true multilateralism, and opposing unilateralism.

Creating a comprehensive framework

Han pointed out that China, as the founder of the Global Governance Initiative, has fulfilled its promises by taking tangible steps to unite all stakeholders and work together to strengthen and reform the global governance framework. According to Han, China and Russia have significant roles to play in changing the global governance structure as big nations and permanent members of the UN Security Council.

In order to further the execution of the Global Governance Initiative and create an open, inclusive, equitable, and just world of win-win cooperation, he continued, China is prepared to work with Russia and all other parties.

The 4-point agenda by China

Han proposed the following four ideas to further the Global Governance Initiative:

First, promote a vision of global governance that includes wide engagement, shared benefits, and collaborative contributions. This includes pursuing true multilateralism, ensuring fair participation, decision-making, and benefit-sharing for all states in global governance. China and Russia have already been at the forefront of promoting multilateralism through BRICS and other forums.

Second, maintain the UN’s standing and power while remaining dedicated to global justice and fairness. In order for the UN to be the main forum for nations to coordinate actions and work together to address shared challenges, all nations should protect international equity based on universally applicable international laws and regulations.

Third, promote shared development to provide more benefits to people worldwide. The UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development should be effectively implemented by nations in order to promote global wealth and shared development.

Fourth, improve coordinated efforts to produce more observable results. To address global issues and promote shared development, nations, international organisations, and multilateral institutions must coordinate policies and development strategies in a well-thought-out way.

China as a global leader

The nation is already reflecting this peaceful global governnace through its actions. The nation has moved towards sustainable solutions such as AI data centers and green maritime technology. China’s role in advocating for more peaceful resolution of conflicts in today’s world is undeniable. Thus, it can act as a reliable leader for Global Governance rooted in justice, fairness and equality.
